Our society has a whole different concept about marriage and intimate relationships than God does. We need to know where God stands and stand with Him, choosing not to accept a godless lifestyle, but upholding His ways in every aspect of our lives, including who we live with, love, and make covenant with, and why those choices are important.
What does the Bible have to say about marriage?
Proverbs 18:22
He who finds a wife finds what is good
and receives favor from the Lord.
Matthew 19:4-6
“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Colossians 3:18-19
Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Hebrews 13:4
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
Ephesians 5:25-26
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.
Not only do we, as believers need to maintain God's holy standard in marriage, but as ministers of the Gospel of Christ, we cannot officiate or enter lightly into bringing about a covenant that God considers holy in an unholy manner. We need to live God's way and bring those seeking a marriage covenant into relationship with each other and the Lord His way.
