Forgiveness stands as one of the central and important themes
embedded in the teachings of Jesus Christ in the bible. It is one of the most
challenging yet essential principals in our faith walk. Biblical forgiveness goes
beyond human knowledge or instinct, commanding Christian believers to
forgive not only those who ask for forgiveness, but it is a commandment for
those who hurt us and have not asked for forgiveness. Forgiveness in
scripture is rooted in God’s grace and mercy and is geared toward
transforming both those that need forgiving as well as those who forgive.
Forgiveness is the context of law in the Bible (Leviticus and Exodus).
The Old Testament law included civil and moral codes that were meant to
guide behaviors of the people to include ensuring justice and order. Even in
that there was room for forgiveness especially along the lines of personal
offenses within the community. Law in the Old Testament that state “eye for
an eye” was to ensure everyone received the same punishment; however, it
was not meant to endorse vengeance but rather places a limitation on
excessive retaliation. The law of Moses also made a way for forgiveness in
personal disputes, recognizing human relationships need not be governed
solely by legal retribution. In cases of personal offense or injury, the law
allowed for forgiveness to be offered rather than harsh punishment. Part of
that is the role of sacrifices and atonement (forgiveness) in the Old Testament
which is communicated via God’s covenant with Israel (sacrificial system); as
well as communicated via the teachings of Jesus Christ in the New
Testament and Jesus role in offering complete forgiveness through the
ultimate sacrifice during his crucifixion through fulfillment of the law.
Jesus did not dismiss law he gives a deeper purpose of the law which is
a call or rather commandment to forgive as God has forgiven us. Jesus gives
additional interpretation of the law of sacrifice as well as worship by placing
significant emphasis on personal reconciliation and forgiveness. This is the
heart of Jesus and law as he requires the need to restore relationships over
ritual performance. We will talk through forgiveness as displayed in the Bible
as it gives insight into forgiveness through personal relationships,
overcoming bitterness and anger and the need for justice; consequences of
unforgiveness (including spiritual), how forgiveness impacts mental and
emotional well-being. We will also visit the role of the church in promoting
forgiveness, the importance of forgiveness in healing broken relationships;
how forgiveness can shape our community, life, and peace. Finally, we will
understand the call to action for practicing forgiveness as a reflection of God’s
grace.
